The difference between Synthetic and Real Human Hair Extensions
Choosing the right hair extensions for you can be daunting especially if it’s your first time trying them or if you’ve very little knowledge of the different types of hair. We often hear the words ‘Synthetic’ and ‘Human Hair’ so this is my guide on the difference between the two types.
Synthetic hair is a lot cheaper than real hair extensions which is great if you’re on a budget and looking for a quick fix for a special occasion. However the downfall of them being cheaper will reflect on the longevity and quality of the hair and it’s not easy to work with like real hair extensions.
Synthetic hair is made of monofilament fibres or a combination of two or three polyfilament fibres, acrylic or polyester. The hair melts if you use heat products on them which makes it harder to style them. The highest grade of synthetic hair is a synthetic PVC fibre called toyokalon which is more realistic and allows heat to be used on them however they can just as expensive as human hair extensions.
The biggest problem with synthetic hair is it can be hard to mimic your natural hair making it either too shiny or too dry to blend into your natural hair.
Most synthetic hair ranges either come naturally straight or curly which means you can’t style them any other way.
The most popular form of synthetic hair extensions are clip ins which are great for short term use and will last around 3 months.
Some of the Cons

Human hair extensions
Human hair extensions are different because they looks and feels exactly as your own natural hair. Remy human hair is one of the top quality extensions to purchase. I only use grade A Remy hair extensions on my clients. We will often get confused with the term ‘Remy’ and it basically means the hair follicles all go in one single direction. Remy hair is collected in a method in which all the hair strands stay aligned in the natural direction, maintaining the natural texture, pattern and cuticle alignment.
This eliminates tangling problems commonly found in non-Remy or low quality hair. With regular maintenance Remy human hair extensions should last up to 8 months but please be aware of the brand you are choosing as some companies will put its 100% Remy hair and if it’s not your find it will Matt and tangle straight away.
Due to the way the Remy human hair is collected this type of hair can be in short supply and therefore can be expensive. This phrase speaks real truth “Invest in your hair, it is the only crown you never take off”.
Some of the pros
- Can be curled and heated
- Safe for straightening
- Can be toned, dyed and cut
- Blend naturally with your hair
- Choice of natural colours
- Feel silky, soft and shiny
- Last longer up to 8 months
- Doesn’t fade or tangle
Some of the cons
- Can be expensive
- Can take a lot of maintenance
